Do your bit: Invest in your community

Do your bit

It is said that charity begins at home, and there are a range of simple things that can be done locally that will not only benefit the community but also create ripples of good further afield. The following dates are celebrated in June and can be ideal ways to get into the humanitarian swing.

5 June      World Environment Day (United Nations)

Each year the UN World Environment Day focuses on a specific environmental concern. The theme for 2019, “Beat Air Pollution”, is a call to action to combat this global crisis.

What you can do: Consider how you can change your everyday activities to actively reduce the amount of air pollution you are creating such as walking to the shops instead of driving or opting for higher energy rated home appliances.

11 June      Gold Telethon (Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation)

The largest fundraiser for the Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation, the televised Gold Telethon raises funds for Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Bear Cottage, Kids Research and NETS.

What you can do: Tune into the live telethon and make a donation.

14 June      World Blood Donor Day (United Nations)

The focus this year is blood donation in emergencies, and whether or not there is an emergency, blood products are always in demand.

What you can do: Make an appointment as a family to head to the nearest donation centre (Australian Red Cross, 1/192 Queen Street Campbelltown).

15 June      National Buddy Day (The Alannah and Madeline Foundation)

National Buddy Day celebrates the importance of friendship and raises awareness of bullying amongst primary school students.

What you can do: Have a chat with your children about bullying; reach out to a new neighbour.
