The Art Of Feng Shui: Positively Impacting Design

Feng Shui has been practised in China for well over 6,000 years, and played a significant role in shaping the country’s architecture. Despite attempts to supress it during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960’s, Feng Shui has done more than just remain a prominent method of design. It has broken the borders of its country and become well known throughout the Western world too.

Feng Shui was developed over 4,000 years, and during that time practitioners developed a map-like device known as a Bagua. It has eight sections, each relating to a point on a traditional compass and are connected to specific areas of life, as follows:

The Bagua can help you define the areas of your home that are for certain areas of your life. If you have a copy of the plans of your home, you will need to draw a grid with nine squares, and then align the bottom row (NE, N, and NW) with the wall of the front door.

This will enable you to ascertain which rooms are in which areas, and decorate using furnishings that harness its element to channel the positive energy for those areas in your life you want to focus on.

Below are two more basic Feng Shui principals you can use in your home.

Clear the Clutter

If you do not love it, get rid of it. Time and energy consuming, this first and important step in the process will feel like therapy as it helps you ‘lighten the load’. This step is essential in creating harmony, and must not be skipped.

Good Air, Good Light

Open windows and doors allow as much air flow through your home as possible. And where possible let in as much natural light as you can. If you are in the process of building your home, it would be a good opportunity to look at installing skylights if natural light is difficult to harness.
